This episode discusses what the definitions are for helicopter parenting and free range parenting, two of a huge number of different parenting methods that parents can choose from in today’s society.
Helicopter parenting, which is more or less synonymous with over-parenting, is generally accepted today as a bad thing, overcoming the trend in past decades for marketing to triumph over good sense. Parents no longer subscribe to the concept that their children must be constantly stimulated and tutored, and bought expensive training packages, toys and education aids. But the fear that they might be helicopter parents is still very present in people’s minds today – how much supervision is too much?
Free range parenting came into existence as a foil for the over-protective, hovering parenting methods of past years. But now the concern becomes: are we giving our children too much freedom and what might be the consequences?
This episode looks at parenting in the past, when ‘methods’ didn’t exist, and compares them to parenting today, including a look at consequences and dangers versus benefits.
In the next episode of Parents in the Know I will tell the story of my own journey to parenthood and discuss some of the ins and outs of assisted reproduction. Sperm Donation and Achieving My Parenting Dream, next time on Parents in the Know.
Thanks for listening.
